Abbaye-aux-Dames
Fondée vers 1060 par Mathilde de Flandre, épouse de Guillaume le Bâtard, l’Abbaye aux Dames est consacrée le 18 juin1066 sous le nom de la Sainte Trinité.
Cette abbaye bénédictine abrite jusqu’à la Révolution française des jeunes filles issues de l’aristocratie normande.
Au fil des siècles le couvent se dégrade et au début du XVIIIe siècle, l’abbesse, Madame Froulay de Tessé entreprend sa reconstruction. Le projet est confié au moine architecte Dom Guillaume de la Tremblaye. La construction demande pratiquement un siècle (1702-1788).
En plus des religieuses et des novices, l’abbaye prend en charge au XVIIIe siècle l’éducation de quelques pensionnaires dont la plus célèbre est Charlotte Corday.
La Révolution entraîne la fermeture du couvent en août 1792. Le couvent est alors aménagé en caserne et l’église devient un entrepôt de fourrage.
En 1809, un dépôt de mendicité est installé à l’abbaye afin de remédier au vagabondage. Devant un constat d’échec, le dépôt ferme ses portes en 1818.
En 1823 les bâtiments deviennent un Hôtel-Dieu puis l’hospice Saint-Louis en 1908.
En 1983 les bâtiments sont rachetés par le Conseil Régional de Basse-Normandie qui, après deux années de travaux, prend possession de ces lieux chargés d’histoire.

Established about 1060 by Mathilde de Flandre, wife of William the Bastard, the Abbey to the Ladies is dedicated 18 juin1066 under the name of the Holy Trinity.
This abbey Benedictine shelters until the French Revolution the girls stemming from the Norman aristocracy.
In the course of the centuries the convent degrades and at the beginning of the XVIIIth century, the abbess, Madam Froulay de Tessé undertakes its reconstruction. The project is entrusted to the monk architect Dom Guillaume de la Tremblaye. The construction takes practically a century ( 1702-1788 ).
Besides the nuns and the novices, the abbey takes care in the XVIIIth century of the education of some boarders whose the most famous is Charlotte Corday.
The Revolution pulls the closure of the convent in August, 1792. The convent is then fitted out in barracks and the church becomes a warehouse of feed.
In 1809, a deposit of begging is installed in the abbey to remedy the wandering. In front of an admission of failure, the deposit closes its doors in 1818.
In 1823 buildings become a Hôtel-Dieu then the Saint-Louis home in 1908.
In 1983 buildings are acquired by the Regional council of Basse-Normandie which, after two years of works, takes up these places steeped in history.
