Geocache Description:

Picnic er Sniaul

This event on Sunday 16th August will take you to the top of the highest mountain on the Isle of Man, Snaefell (2,036 feet, 621 metres).

The Snaefell Mountain Railway opened in 1895 (120 years ago this week!) and is the only electric mountain railway in the British Isles. Most of the trams operating today are still the originals. In 1950, a radio station was built on the summit of Snaefell and this is still in operation for civil aviation.

At the top, you can admire the views (hopefully!) and find the cache(s). The moving virtual cache Ye Olde Survey Monuments will also be there! Either bring a picnic or you can buy food at the cafe.

The event will be from 2.15pm to 4.15m. Your options for getting up here are:

• Take the tram from Laxey. This leaves Laxey at 1.45pm and arrives on the summit at 2.15pm. After the event, the tram leaves the summit at 4.10pm and arrives back in Laxey at 4.40pm.

• Walk from the Bungalow- allow about 30 minutes. There is a cache on the way!

• Although there is the option of catching the tram from the Bungalow, seats cannot be guaranteed at busy times.

To be sure of a seat, we encourage you to book and pay in advance. We have negotiated a discount that is only available for Laxey to the summit and return at the tram times given above. Discounted tickets are £10 adult, £5 child (normal prices on the day are £12 adult, £6 child). Further details are available from Manxgeocaching.com.

Alternatively, you may wish to purchase a “Go Explore” card which allows unlimited travel on rail and bus services. Click here for more information.
