A Horta é uma cidade portuguesa com cerca de 8800 habitantes da Região Autónoma dos Açores. É sede do Parlamento regional e de um concelho do mesmo nome, que ocupa toda a superfície da Ilha do Faial, com uma superfície total de 172,43 km² com 14 994 habitantes (em 2011). Tem uma densidade populacional de 86,96 hab./km².

Horta, na rota dos iates. Ao principio - e há apenas escassos anos - o seu número contava-se pelos dedos da mão e a sua chegada era um acontecimento. Hoje são centenas os iates que fazem da Horta o seu porto de escala obrigatório na travessia do Atlântico ou o vértice de um triângulo que termina nas costas da América ou da Europa, Nomes famosos do iatismo como Joshua Siocum, o primeiro navegador solitário a dar a volta ao Mundo. Tabarly, Sir Francis Chichester, Malinovsky e Fougeron, em viagens históricas, ancoraram os seus veleiros nas águas azuis do porto. E a Horta tem sido porto de chegada ou de escala de regatas internacionais. Uma Marina amplia a capacidade de receção e de apoio aos iates que demandam a Horta. Consagrando, assim, a tradição náutica que despontava da cidade, assegurando o seu papel de porto seguro e acolhedor do Atlântico norte.

A MARINA DA HORTA – FAIAL
A Marina da Horta, inaugurada em 1986 é uma das mais movimentada do Mundo. É por isso bem conhecida a tradição dos iatistas ou aventureiros em deixarem uma pintura alusiva à sua embarcação sobre os paredões da Marina. Segundo a lenda, este ato levará o barco em segurança ao seu destino.
Assim, quem passa pela Marina da Horta depara com uma galeria de arte a céu aberto com o mundo inteiro representado no molhe deste porto açoriano, por criativas e coloridas pinturas.
No Faial a visita à Marina da Horta é obrigatória, pela animação dos iates que ali lançam amarras e pela grande exposição a céu aberto de pinturas feitas no molhe por todos os marinheiros que a visitam.
Esta infraestrutura náutica, inaugurada em 1986, é o prolongamento moderno de um porto e uma baía com importância secular. A marina, com capacidade para 300 embarcações, é atualmente a quarta marina oceânica mais visitada, uma das mais importantes do Mundo e detentora de Bandeira Azul da Europa desde 1987.
A sua localização oferece um excelente abrigo contra os ventos de todas as direções e faz dela uma paragem quase obrigatória para as centenas de iates das mais diversas nacionalidades que aqui fazem escala anual nas suas viagens pelo Atlântico Norte, e também para os veleiros que viajam das Caraíbas em direção ao Mediterrâneo.
Todos os anos aqui se realizam diversas regatas internacionais, normalmente dirigidas à vela oceânica de cruzeiro, com meta ou escala nesta marina, tornando a Horta num ponto de encontro de muitas provas de vela internacionais como Les Sables – Les Açores- Les Sables, Atlantique Pogo, La Route des Hortensias, ARC Europe, Ceuta-Horta, OCC Azores Pursuit Race, entre muitas outras.
