Hôtel de Fontenay
Le cas de la Banque de France, ancien hôtel de Fontenay, est unique à Caen : la reconstruction en a été menée à l'identique.
L'hôtel Le Brun de Fontenay avait été édifié au XVIIIe siècle, au milieu d'un parc à l'anglaise dont un seul arbre a survécu aux bombardements de juin 1944. De même, les bâtiments furent dévastés par les bombes incendiaires qui ont été larguées au cours de ce même mois.
La décision de reconstruction de cet hôtel, vendu à la Banque de France en 1857, n'appartenait pas aux autorités municipales. C'est l'architecte en chef de la Banque de France, Monsieur Tournon, qui dressa les plans de la succursale caennaise à reconstruire. La direction de l'opération fut confiée à Pierre Auvray, un des acteurs majeurs de l'architecture en ces années-là.
Tout a été fidèlement reconstruit, et les décors, d'après documents et moulages, ont été restitués. Même si le parc a été amputé des deux tiers, l'hôtel de Fontenay est une résidence magnifique.
Résidence très privée également : pour des raisons aisément compréhensibles, elle n'est guère visible de l'extérieur, sauf des immeubles qui la dominent de toutes parts. C'est peut-être là que le bât blesse : cela a été signalé auparavant, aucune architecture d'accompagnement n'a été prévue. L'hôtel de Fontenay, d'une manière moins flagrante que la maison des Quatrans, est isolé dans les îlots reconstruits. Le promeneur peut se consoler en regardant la cour d'honneur, hélas encombrée de voitures.

The case of the Bank of France, former hotel of Fontenay, is unique in Caen: the reconstruction was led there as before.
The hotel The Brown of Fontenay had been built in the XVIIIth century, in the middle of an English-style park where a single tree survived the bombardments of June, 1944. Also, buildings were destroyed by the incendiary bombs which were released during the same month.
The decision of reconstruction of this hotel, sold to the Bank of France in 1857, did not belong to the municipal authorities. It is the chief architect of the Bank of France, Mister Tournon, that drew up the plans of the caennaise branch to be reconstructed. The management of the operation was entrusted to Pierre Auvray, one of the leading players of the architecture in these years.
Everything was faithfully reconstructed, and sets, according to documents and moldings, were restored. Even if the park was amputated by two thirds, the hotel of Fontenay is a magnificent residence.
Very private residence also: for easily understandable reasons, it is hardly visible from the outside, except buildings which dominate it from everywhere. It is maybe where the problem lies: it was previously indicated, no architecture of accompaniment was planned. The hotel of Fontenay, in a less blatant way than the house of Quatrans, is isolated in the reconstructed islands. The walker can find comfort by looking at the main courtyard, regrettably blocked by cars.
