Badab-e Surt (Persian: باداب سورت) is a natural site in Mazandaran Province in northern Iran, en Route from Tehran to Mashhad.
Amidst high Mountain ranges which are having a picturesque layer of snow most of the year you find a series of Travertine Terraces perched on top of a mountain near the little village of Orost at 1,840 metres (6,040 ft) above sea level.
باداب سورت یک منطقه ی طبیعی در استان مازندران در شمال ایران است که در مسیر تهران به مشهد قرار گرفته است. بر فراز کوهها که در بیشتر سال یک تصویر زیبا از نمای برفی نمایش میدهند یک سری از تراسهای آهکی (تراورتن) وجود دارند که بر بالای کوهی در نزدیکی روستای ارست، در ارتفاع 1840 متری ( 6040 پا) از سطح دریا قرار گرفته اند.
این تراسها در طول هزاران سال و در نتیجه ی فعالیت دو چشمه ایجاد گردیده اند.آب این دو چشمه، یکی سرد و دیگری گرم، یکی شده و در سراشیبی کوه خنک می شود.
Over thousands of years two different springs have created these formations. Flowing water from the springs, one containing hot and the other one cold water, merged and cooled down on their way along the gently sloping mountain.
تراس های باداب سورت در دوره های زمین شناسی پلیستوسن و پلیوسن شکل گرفته اند و این به این معناست که آنها به قدمت تقریبی 5 میلیون سال هستند. زمانیکه آب، آبی اشباع شده از کربنات کلسیم و کربنات آهن، به لایه سطحی میرسد، دی اکسید کربن بخار شده ( هم صدا و هم بوی آن قابل حس میباشد)، و کربنات های معدنی ته نشین میگردند. این پروسه ته نشینی تا جایی ادامه میابد که میزان دی اکسید کربن هوا با دی اکسید کربن موجود در آب برابری میکند.
Badab-e Surt's terraces were formed during Pleistocene and Pliocene geological periods, which means they are younger than circa 5 million years. When the water, supersaturated with Calcium carbonate and Iron carbonate reaches the surface, carbon dioxide evaporates from it (which you can hear and smell), and mineral carbonates are deposited. The depositing continues until the carbon dioxide in the water balances the carbon dioxide in the air
روند ته نشینی ابتدا به صورت یک حجم ژله ای شروع میگردد امااگر روند طبیعی مختل نگردد و یا روی آن راه رفته نشود بعد از مدتی به صورت تراورتن سفت میگردد. این پروسه هنوز به اتمام نرسیده : شما میتوانید حجم های وانی شکل و تراس های بسیار جوان را مشاهدع کنید که همچنان لایه به لایه در حال بزرگ شدن هستند. زمان راه رفتن با احتیاط قدم بردارید که مبادا این پروسه طبیعی مختل گردد و سعی کنید که از پا گذاشتن بر روی لبه ی پیکر بندی ها خودداری کنید.
The deposit starts out as a jellylike layer, but it eventually will harden into travertine if not disturbed or carelessly walked upon. This process has not ended yet: you can see big bathtublike shapes and some very young terraces, which will still grow layer by layer. walk carefully, not to disturb this process and try not to step upon the delicate rim of the formations.
شما میتوانید به راحتی دو چشمه متفاوت را از یکدیگر تمییز دهید. از آب چشمه بنوشید و خواهید دید که اولی دارای نمک میباشد: آب این چشمه در یک حوضچه طبیعی آن هم در مرکز این شگفتی زمین شناسی جمع میگردد. افراد محلی بسیار از خواص درمانی آن سخن میگویند، سالها از آن برای درمان رماتیسم و برخی بیماری های پوستی استفاده میشد.
You can easily make out the two distinctly different springs. You should taste the water of both and you will find one spring very salty: it gathers in a small natural pool right in the centre of this geological wonder. Locals tell you about its healing properties, it has long been used for the villagers as a cure against rheumatism and some types of skin diseases and skin conditions.
چشمه ی دوم دارای دما و رنگ متفاوتی است و طعم آن نیز بیشتر ترش میباشد. .
The second spring has different colours and temperature and its tastes rather sour/metalic.

مراقب باشید که به این شگفتی زمین شناسی لطمه ای وارد نیاید و این مکان را مرتب حفظ کنید.
Be very careful not to disturb this geological wonder and keep the place tidy!
برای ثبت و حفر مخزن خود به سوالات زیر پاسخ دهید:
1. حداقل سه رنگ متفاوت از تراورتن را که مشاهده میکنید ذکر کرده و در صورت امکان و تمایل یک عکس قرار دهید
2. به نظر شما چه چیز عامل اصلی ایجاد رنگهای مختلف است و چرا تا این اندازه متفاوت هستند؟
3. دو چشمه ی متفاوت را موقعیت بابی کرده و بگویید کدام دارای کلسیم و کدام یک دارای آهن است؟ آیا ظاهر و طعم آب متفاوت است؟
4. اگر مایل باشید می توانید عکسی از خود با پایتان بر زمین مرطوب پنج میلیون ساله قرار دهید

To log the cache answer the following Questions:
1. mention at least 3 different colours of the travertines that you can see and add a picture if you like.
2. what do you think makes the colours and why are they so different?
3. locate the 2 different springs and tell me, which one is the one that carries the Calcium, which one carries Iron? define them by "the upper" and "the lower" spring and tell me, which one is the salty one? which one is cold, which one is hot?
4. look around at the main plateau: how many signposts do you see standing?
5. If you like you can add a picture with you with your feet on wet ground about 5 mio years old ;-)
