Geocache Description:

The beginning of the Israeli banking was in this building corner of APC and Jerusalem Ave, in Jaffa. In 1897 an article was published by Theodor Herzl, following which he collected 250,000 pounds, which established the Jewish Colonial Trust

The group's aim was to established a financial institution to promote Zionist colonization in Palestine. The trust started the Anglo Palestine Company in 1902. This London based company opened an office in Jaffa in 1903. The bank was forced to close its offices during World War 1, but operated from the Spanish Consulate in Jerusalem. The company changed its name in the mid 1920 to the Anglo Palestine Bank, and played a significant role in development of local agriculture. The bank printed monetary notes for the government. In 1951, a company named Leumi le Israel was founnded and took control of the bank.
