Geocache Description:

Right outside the Caesarea National Park is an impressive Byzantine road. No entrance fee necessary.

Caesarea is a most impressive national archeological site from the 1st century, which is one of the top touristic sites in Israel. It is highly recommended for anyone interested in history. Whereas the main site is a national park with an entrance fee, beside it, close to the parking lots, is a small beautiful Roman street unknown to most travelers. This is where the cache resides. To get to this ancient Roman Street you will need to enter the celebration venue named 'Caesarea Cellars' (see waypoint). If the gate is closed, you can bypass it carefully from the right. When looking for the cache - watch out for snakes.

The excavated site is that of a Byzantine street paved with marble slabs and mosaics. The street has two large statues facing each other dating from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. The statues belonged originally to Roman temples, and were brought to the street when it was built. In the mosaic you can see an inscription saying: "The commander Flavios Strategios built the wall and the stairs and the apse (a semicircular recess) at public expenditure, in the days of the procurator Flavivios Entolis, in the tenth indication in a good hour."
