Last Christmas, dinner was a disaster. The gravy was lumpy, the sprouts were soggy and the custard was left in the microwave ( again!) We never did find the chestnuts and no-one wanted to eat the "Santa Surprises" as quite frankly, they didn't look anything like they did in the recipe book. Mind you, not many of the ingredients were the right ones, as we didn't have half of them to start with. Mrs Claus is a sweet old lady and we love her dearly, but she's useless in the Kitchen.
There, we've said it. We need you help to make sure that we don't all go hungry again this year.
We're going to have a bring and share lunch instead, but it's only 12 days away and we need to work out how many emergency chairs we'll need. We've sent out the invitations and these are the RSVP's we've had back so far.
A. The Maids are coming after they've finished milking and they've offered to bring the Partridge with them. We just hope they realise they've got to bring nibbles too, and the Partridge is a guest, not a starter!
B. The Turtle Doves are making their own way here. It turns out they've had a bit of a tiff too, so they'll be here separately. To try to cheer them up we'll put one at the North end of the Table between the Maids and the Ladies and the other one will have to squeeze in with the Drummers
C. The Ladies are going to be late, because they're going out dancing the night before, but they will all be here. They've promised to rustle up something delicious for us, and we don't mind waiting as they cheat a lot and sometimes get the caterers in ( here's hoping!)
D. The Leaping Lords are a nightmare, they said they were all coming, but we've just heard that two of them got into a fight last night, they've been arrested and no one wants to post bail. I think we've all had just about enough of those two anyway. The rest will come, but hopefully there'll be no leaping. They'll leave it all til the last minute and buy something inappropriate, but they're a good laugh so we'll forgive them.
E. We had our hopes pinned on the Drummers for a bit of background noise, but half of them went down with food poisoning after their office party, so they're not coming as we've only got one loo. The rest that are still well enough to travel have offered to bring the leftovers. They've got space now in the van so they'll bring the other Dove
F. The Pipers are going to do backing pipes and they are bringing the booze. They are Scottish though, so they might not share! One is a designated driver, so he's not stopping, and he's asked one of the others to stay in the van with him so he's not the only Scot sober on Christmas Day.
