Geocache Description:

D. Francisca de Aragão (1525 - 1615) was the favorite dame of Queen Catherine of Austria, spouse of King João III, a devoted woman, but very concerned about the Inquisition practices. She became delighted with the spirit and vivacity of D. Francisca, the young lady who came from Algarve to the Ribera’s palace, with other young women from her family. Francisca was a daughter of Nuno Rodrigues Barreto, lord of Quarteira and D. Leonor Milan, daughter of Afonso, master of Calatrava and a bastard son of King João II de Aragão. They were people with royal blood, which later justified with her treatment as niece, by King Filipe III de Castela. According to contemporary researchers, Francisca was the 6th daughter of seven siblings, and niece of the famous governor of India, from 1555-1558, Francisco Barreto. Francisca was one of the most beautiful women among the notable beauties of the court. She was a muse who has inspired many poets, among them, Luiz Vaz de Camões, Andrade Caminha, her lover Manuel de Portugal and Juan de Borja, who later became her husband due to his prestigious as an ambassador in Portugal. He was a man with great services to Castile, and later recognized by his merit and made her as the first Countess of Ficalho. She had ten children from her marriage with D. Juan de Borja e Castro, all of them distinguished, with their names and honor in their family coat of arms.
