Bishop Hannington - Memorial
Bishop Hannington Church is part of the national Church of England, in the Diocese of Chichester and in the deanery of Hove. It commemorates Sussex-born James Hannington, who was a missionary and First Bishop of East Equatorial Africa, who was murdered in Uganda, in 1885. (There is an interesting date-stone, embedded next to the entrance).
The expansion of Hangleton and West Blatchington in the 1930's brought about the need for a new church. Edward Maufe was the designer of Bishop Hannington Memorial Church and it was built between 1938-9, so just before the war. Whilst the parishioners were waiting for the church to be completed they worshipped in a building further down Holmes Avenue, which is now the church hall. The church was consecrated on November 2nd 1941. The building is now grade II listed.
Since it opened BH has gone through two expansions. First in 1981 and more recently in 2013. It's an Evangelical church, and the parish includes Aldrington's Holy Cross Church, which also has a cache: GC45H6E.
