Geocache Description:

This history cache is intended to commemorate the location of the town of Pitt, now almost completely vanished. This cache is on personal property. The land owner has given permission for the placement of this cache.

This cache is one of a series of Lake of the Woods County History Caches being developed to memorialize events, locations, and people from Lake of the Woods County's past. Each cache contains several copies of a leaflet explaining some of the history of the area. Feel free to collect one of these from each cache–no trade necessary.

Even though the town of Pitt has been gone for some time, the people living in the area still consider themselves residents of Pitt, and you can still find "Pitt" on the map. The cemetery and a church are still there, and as recently as 1991 the last store/post office still existed (it is now closed)–although not in the same location as the original town, which spread a few buildings east and a few west of the spot where you will be standing when you find the cache.

The cache contains a leaflet with a short history of Pitt that includes several photos of some of the stores and businesses that used to be part of Pitt.
