Geocache Description:

This church micro brings you to the oldest building in Bristol which is still in use. Grade 1 listed St James's Priory.

Opening times: 10am - 5 pm Monday to Friday (some saturdays) Mass on sundays at 8am.




St James Priory is a Grade I listed, 12th century church in central Bristol.
color="black">The main unusual thing about the church is that it is a different colour on both sides (as the right photo shows); this is due to rebuilding of the church.

It was founded in 1129 as a Benedictine priory by Robert, Earl of Gloucester, the illegitimate son of Henry I. The nave survives from 1129 but the tower was added around 1374. The south aisle was widened and rebuilt in 1698. The porch dates from the late 18th century, and the north aisle was rebuilt in 1864.

Note: this cache is in the park, which is occasionally locked in the evening and at night. Difficulty reflects high muggle activity, pick your retrieval time wisely! Fully wheel accessible.
