Birch trees produce millions of tiny winged seeds which are distributed by the wind. When a seed lands on an appropriate patch of bare earth a tree may grow. Where a lot of seeds land on a big patch of bare earth, a forest may grow. This birch forest was established during construction of the Massey Tunnel in 1959. A hole was dredged in the bottom of the Fraser River and the mud was removed and side cast along the side of the highway - where this part of the Nature Park is now located. The resultant expanse of rich river sediments was ideal for colonization by seeds from nearby birch trees.
