Eng:

Elsinore Shipyard and Machine Ltd., was one of Denmark's major shipyards, founded March 1, 1882 by M.C. Holm (1827-1892) from the shipping company Norden. The yard just managed to celebrate 100 years before it closed in 1983. Some of the old shipyard buildings are now converted to Culture Yard.

Around 1957, the shipyard's heyday, there were about 3,600 people employed. "All" worked there or knew someone who did. Therefore Elsinore shipyard had a great importance not only for employment and the economy, but also for the city's political, social and cultural life.

The shipyard has built many ships for example ordered by “DSB” and “DFDS”, but they are almost all  now scrapped again - yes time goes quickly !!

Personally, I have during my young days lived in the rectory of Sct. Mariæ Church, located just opposite the ship yard. I have therefore experienced the “yard signal” when it 2 times a day was marked that now started and ended the workday. In the afternoon, the entire Elsinore inner city was filled with blue boiler suit-clad men who were going home on either foot, bicycles or mopeds. The last mentioned was very popular back in that time.

If you have time, I will recommend you to see both the Carmelite Monastery and Sct. Mariæ Church.

Remember pen!
