The GeoTrail
The New Brunswick Great War Geocaching Project (NBGWGP) was commissioned by the Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. The aim of the NBGWGP is to commemorate the valiant effort and sacrifice of the thousands of New Brunswick men and women who answered the call to arms for King and Canada. The NBGWGP is intended to focus on the soldiers of New Brunswick and those that provided them with comfort. It is our hope that you will learn from this GeoTrail and spend a moment to reflect on the sacrifices at home and abroad. Lest we forget

Historique
Le projet de géocachette sur le rôle du Nouveau-Brunswick durant la Grande Guerre (NBGWGP en anglais) a été commandé par le Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. Ce projet a pour but de commémorer le sacrifice de milliers de Néo-Brunswickois et Néo-Brunswickoises qui ont courageusement accepté de prendre les armes pour défendre leur roi et leur pays. La géocachette met l’accent sur les soldats du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur ceux qui étaient là pour les appuyer. Nous espérons que vous trouverez cette activité enrichissante et que vous prendrez un instant pour songer aux sacrifices qu’ont accomplis ces gens, tant au pays qu’à l’étranger.

This cache location
At the turn of the century, New Brunswickers were introduced to Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone. However, for transatlantic communication the main mode of correspondence was the Royal Post. Early letters from the front were often poignant and short on details about the war. There were two reasons for that: the boys at the front didn’t want to worry their families and secondly, letters were censored by their officers. Finding time between chores and shell bursts was difficult at best. Quiet moments were used to write home, often with a broken pencil — ball point pens were yet to be invented! Here’s an excerpt from a letter written by Private Robert Keenan of Saint John, a member of the 26th New Brunswick Battalion: “I would like to have about four or five pairs of woolen socks sent to me as soon as you get this letter for we loose [sic] most of our clothes when they do the laundry.” The 29-year-old Private Keenan was killed in action on 13 October 1915.

Au début du 20e siècle, les Néo-Brunswickois découvrent le téléphone d’Alexander Graham Bell. Pour les communications transatlantiques toutefois, la poste demeurait le principal moyen de communication. Les premières lettres venant du front étaient souvent émouvantes et ne comportaient pratiquement aucun détail au sujet de la guerre, et ce, pour deux raisons : les soldats au front ne voulaient pas inquiéter leurs proches, et les officiers censuraient les lettres. Trouver le temps d’écrire une lettre entre les corvées et les éclats d’obus était pour le moins difficile. Les soldats profitaient des moments de calme pour écrire à leurs proches, souvent avec un crayon cassé, puisque les stylos à bille n’avaient pas encore été inventés. Voici un extrait d’une lettre écrite par le soldat Robert Keenan de Saint John, membre du 26e bataillon du Nouveau-Brunswick : [Traduction] « J’aimerais que tu m’envoies quatre ou cinq paires de bas de laine dès que tu recevras ma lettre, car nous perdons la plupart de nos vêtements lorsqu’ils font la lessive ». Le soldat Keenan a été tué au combat le 13 octobre 1915 à l’âge de 29 ans.
