The GeoTrail
The New Brunswick Great War GeoTrail Project (NBGWGP) was commissioned by the Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. The aim of the NBGWGP is to commemorate the valiant effort and sacrifice of the thousands of New Brunswick men and women who answered the call to arms for King and Canada. The NBGWGP is intended to focus on the soldiers of New Brunswick and those that provided them with comfort. It is our hope that you will learn from this GeoTrail and spend a moment to reflect on the sacrifices at home and abroad. Lest we forget

Historique
Le projet de géocachette sur le rôle du Nouveau-Brunswick durant la Grande Guerre (NBGWGP en anglais) a été commandé par le Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. Ce projet a pour but de commémorer le sacrifice de milliers de Néo-Brunswickois et Néo-Brunswickoises qui ont courageusement accepté de prendre les armes pour défendre leur roi et leur pays. La géocachette met l’accent sur les soldats du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur ceux qui étaient là pour les appuyer. Nous espérons que vous trouverez cette activité enrichissante et que vous prendrez un instant pour songer aux sacrifices qu’ont accomplis ces gens, tant au pays qu’à l’étranger.

This cache location
The symbol of a “White Feather” being used to represent cowardice began in the eighteenth century from the notion that the white feather in the tail of a game bird signified inferior quality. Chauvinist women were quick to hand out white feathers to those able-bodied men whom they thought should be in uniform doing their part at the front. The reality was that wounded or sick soldiers were returned home to Canada and experienced the insult of being presented with a white feather by a member of the public who felt it was their moral responsibility to shame any seemingly well-bodied man into enlisting. In order to counteract this, Silver War badges were introduced, to be given to service personnel to protect them from being challenged when not in uniform. The badges were to indicate to a patriotic public that these veterans were to be excluded from “overt moral pressure to enlist” – an indication of the disconnect between those involved in the fighting and those left at home. The lapel pin read “Services Rendered For King & Empire” and bore the Royal Cypher.

La plume blanche était employée depuis le XVIIIe siècle pour représenter la lâcheté, car la plume blanche dans la queue du gibier à plumes était considérée comme étant de qualité inférieure. Les femmes chauvines n’hésitaient pas à remettre des plumes blanches aux hommes qu’elles croyaient en mesure d’aller au front. Or, la réalité était tout autre : les soldats blessés ou malades qui revenaient de la guerre subissaient l’humiliation de se voir présenter une plume blanche par des gens qui se croyaient investis de la responsabilité morale de couvrir de honte tout homme qui semblait bon pour le service. Pour remédier à la situation, on a créé les badges Silver War que l’on remettait aux militaires afin de les protéger des gens qui s’en prenaient à eux lorsqu’ils n’étaient pas en uniforme. Ces badges servaient à indiquer au public patriotique que ces anciens combattants devaient être exclus de la « pression morale publique de s’enrôler » – une indication du fossé qui s’était creusé entre ceux qui prenaient part au combat et ceux qui étaient restés au pays. L’épinglette portait les mentions « For King and Empire » (pour le roi et l’empire) et « Services Rendered » (service rendu) et affichait le monogramme royal.
