The GeoTrail
The New Brunswick Great War GeoTrail Project (NBGWGP) was commissioned by the Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. The aim of the NBGWGP is to commemorate the valiant effort and sacrifice of the thousands of New Brunswick men and women who answered the call to arms for King and Canada. The NBGWGP is intended to focus on the soldiers of New Brunswick and those that provided them with comfort. It is our hope that you will learn from this GeoTrail and spend a moment to reflect on the sacrifices at home and abroad. Lest we forget

Historique
Le projet de géocachette sur le rôle du Nouveau-Brunswick durant la Grande Guerre (NBGWGP en anglais) a été commandé par le Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. Ce projet a pour but de commémorer le sacrifice de milliers de Néo-Brunswickois et Néo-Brunswickoises qui ont courageusement accepté de prendre les armes pour défendre leur roi et leur pays. La géocachette met l’accent sur les soldats du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur ceux qui étaient là pour les appuyer. Nous espérons que vous trouverez cette activité enrichissante et que vous prendrez un instant pour songer aux sacrifices qu’ont accomplis ces gens, tant au pays qu’à l’étranger.

War bonds, or as they were called in Canada, Victory bonds, were in effect loans to the government that could be redeemed five, 10 or 15 years later with interest. They were sold to raise funds to pay for the war effort. Each victory bond campaign used vividly dramatic posters to urge people to buy them. Victory bonds were sold to citizens, private corporations and to various organizations throughout the war. After the Armistice there was still a huge debt for the costs of the war, so a Victory bond campaign with the theme “Bring our Boys Back” was launched to raise the funds needed for the rehabilitation of the returning forces.

Les obligations de guerre, ou les obligations de la Victoire comme on les appelait au Canada, étaient en fait des prêts au gouvernement qui pouvaient être rachetés cinq, dix ou quinze ans plus tard avec intérêts. Elles étaient vendues pour recueillir des fonds afin de soutenir l’effort de guerre. Chaque campagne des obligations de la Victoire utilisait des affiches saisissantes pour encourager les gens à en acheter. On les vendait pendant la guerre aux citoyens, aux entreprises privées et à différentes organisations. Après l’Armistice, le Canada avait encore une énorme dette en raison du coût élevé de la guerre. On a alors lancé une campagne de bons de la Victoire sous le thème « Bring our boys back » (ramenons nos gars) afin d’amasser les fonds nécessaires pour la réadaptation des troupes à leur retour au pays.
