The GeoTour
The New Brunswick Great War GeoTour Project (NBGWGP) was commissioned by the Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. The aim of the NBGWGP is to commemorate the valiant effort and sacrifice of the thousands of New Brunswick men and women who answered the call to arms for King and Canada. The NBGWGP is intended to focus on the soldiers of New Brunswick and those that provided them with comfort. It is our hope that you will learn from this GeoTour and spend a moment to reflect on the sacrifices at home and abroad. Lest we forget

Historique
Le projet de géocachette sur le rôle du Nouveau-Brunswick durant la Grande Guerre (NBGWGP en anglais) a été commandé par le Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. Ce projet a pour but de commémorer le sacrifice de milliers de Néo-Brunswickois et Néo-Brunswickoises qui ont courageusement accepté de prendre les armes pour défendre leur roi et leur pays. La géocachette met l’accent sur les soldats du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur ceux qui étaient là pour les appuyer. Nous espérons que vous trouverez cette activité enrichissante et que vous prendrez un instant pour songer aux sacrifices qu’ont accomplis ces gens, tant au pays qu’à l’étranger.

This cache location
After the Great War many veterans formed organizations that preserved the memories of their service and of their lost comrades through meetings and annual reunions. Among them was the Byng Boys Club, which was founded in 1919 by the future lieutenant governor David Lawrence MacLaren among others, and was located in Saint John. It had as its honorary commanding officer the former Canadian Corps commander and then governor-general General Lord Julian Byng of Vimy. The original membership included those soldiers who had served overseas and had been “brought out of the line on a stretcher.” This restriction was relaxed over the years and membership was extended to those who had served in the military and merchant marine and faced the enemy under fire. For many years members met on a bi-weekly basis at a branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Later, the club was kept going by Second World War veterans and continued to meet until 2007 when it closed its doors.

À l’issue de la Grande Guerre, beaucoup d’anciens combattants ont fondé des associations, dont le mandat était de perpétuer le souvenir de leur service militaire et celui de leurs camarades morts au combat en organisant des réunions et des retrouvailles annuelles. Parmi ces associations, il y avait le Byng Boys Club, fondé à Saint John en 1919 par un groupe d’hommes, dont David Lawrence MacLaren qui deviendra plus tard lieutenant-gouverneur. Son commandant honoraire était l’ancien commandant du Corps canadien et gouverneur général, lord Julian Byng, vicomte de Vimy. Au début, seuls les soldats ayant servi outre-mer et « sortis de la ligne de feu sur un brancard » pouvaient devenir membres du club. Au fil des ans, cette restriction s’est assouplie pour inclure tous ceux qui ont servi dans l’armée ou la marine marchande et qui ont été sous le feu de l’ennemi. Pendant de nombreuses années, les membres se rencontraient toutes les deux semaines à une filiale de la Légion royale canadienne. Des années plus tard, d’anciens combattants de la Seconde Guerre mondiale ont permis au club de poursuivre ses activités en continuant de se rencontrer, et ce, jusqu’en 2007, lorsque le club a fermé ses portes.
