History records the terrible deeds of several female pirates. Anne Bonney and Mary Reade fought in the Caribbean every bit as fiercely and fiendishly as their male counterparts. Both dressed like men to win places on pirate crews, since most pirate ships articles clearly stated that women were not permitted on board. Together, along with Calico Jack Rackham, they continued their plundering and pillaging throughout the Caribbean. Bonney and Reade were on board Rackham's ship when it was boarded by Captain Barnet of the British Navy. With the pirate crew drunk from stolen rum, they were unable to muster more than a half-hearted defense. As the crew surrendered and were driven below deck, two pirates remained on deck swinging and slashing at, and berating those who surrendered. The two were Bonney and Reade, and it took nearly half of Barnet's crew to subdue and confine the two. Both were thrown into prison. At their trial Anne spoke for both of them. She said, "We plead our bellies, sir!". Neither of the women were hanged, and they were both given a stay of execution. You see, both were pregnant and law forbade sentencing a pregnant woman to death. Mary eventually died of fever in prison, but Anne disappeared. It is believed that she was set free and went to live with her father and his wife in the Carolinas.
