Geocache Description:

If you are already sufficiently tired of swimming in the ocean and sunning on the beach, it is time to experience the beauty of nature Mauritius. National Park Black River Gorges is just the perfect place. Park is located in the southwest of the island and its area of over 6500 hectares occupies 3.5% of its area. It was founded relatively recently, only in 1994, in order to protect the natural wealth of the island and bring the tourists who visit it. And it is something to watch! In this "green treasure" Mauritius among others, can see over 300 species of plants and 9 species of birds that live nowhere else than in Mauritius. If you are lucky, you will see rare birds such as Mauritius Kestrel, pink Pigeon or parrot Alexander Mauritius.

Before visiting the park is recommend stopping in one of the information centers, where you can find lots of interesting information about the park, current trail conditions, or buy the map. On the way towards Chamarel you made stops with beautiful views of the waterfalls of Chamarel. The St. Denis Rivers flows through fields, gorges and green spaces seawards and makes for a splendid view. Tourists can choose to see the waterfalls from the upper deck situated at the Chamarel Seven Colored Earth reserve, or, can head down the trail to enjoy shallow water swimming at the bottom of the Chamarel falls. The Chamarel falls are definitely the most famous and recognized waterfalls in Mauritius and as such have always been a main attraction for tourists and if you are one, you simply cannot afford to miss the magnificent and “best waterfalls in Mauritius”! Falls are named after the nearby Chamarel village. This village in turn is named after the first settlers. Infantry captain Antoine Régis Chazal de Chamarel settled here with his brother Tristan in 1786. Later they sold it - but the name remained.

Waterfall has formed on Baie de Cap stream and falls over a wide, overhanging cliff amphitheatre, formed by two basaltic lava layers. Basalt is formed from the rapid cooling of basaltic lava exposed at or very near the surface of a planet. By definition, basalt is an aphanitic igneous rock with less than 20% quartz and less than 10% feldspathoid by volume, and where at least 65% of the feldspar is in the form of plagioclase. Basalt features a glassy matrix interspersed with minerals.Basalt is defined by its mineral content and texture. Basalt is usually grey to black in colour, but rapidly weathers to brown or rust-red due to oxidation of its mafic (iron-rich) minerals into rust. Although usually characterized as "dark", basaltic rocks exhibit a wide range of shading due to regional geochemical processes. Due to weathering or high concentrations of plagioclase, some basalts are quite light coloured, superficially resembling rhyolite to untrained eyes. Basalt has a fine-grained mineral texture due to the molten rock cooling too quickly for large mineral crystals to grow, although it is often porphyritic, containing the larger crystals formed prior to the extrusion that brought the lava to the surface.

The volcanic deposits are usually divided into three groups corresponding to three main periods of activity. These are from oldest to youngest:

(1) The basalt massifs and the very dense conglomerates of the original volcano. Isotope dating and geomagnetic polarization indicate that they are seven million years old. They form the island's skeleton and occupy about 20 % of it, with rocky masses and high peaks arranged in a circle around the ancient volcano. together with a few isolated peaks in the middle of the island

(2) Intermediate basaltic flows cover the ancient basalts, mainly in the south-west third of the island and also in a strip 20-km wide running from Port Louis to Mahebourg

(3) The youngest flows (there are no traces of activity in modern times) came from the volcanos situated in the heart of the ancient volcano, from which they escaped towards the sea, and also from volcanos located in the north.

chamarel waterfall is a testimony to the volcanic activity, that lasted several milons year. It highlights .... lava flows of different ages

To success log answer:

1) How many lava flows created waterfalls?

2) How old is 2nd flow?

3) 1st flow is situated in top/bottom of waterfall?

4) add foto (not required)
