Geocache Description:

Grapevine Creek was the site of the last battle in the Hatfield McCoy Feud. It happened on January 18th, 1888. After the burning of Randolph McCoy's cabin on January 1st, 1888 there was a renewed push by authorities in Kentucky to bring the Hatfields to justice. Bad Frank Phillips rode into West Virginia with a posse and the Hatfields were waiting for him with an armed group oof their own.

The two met at Grapevine Creek. During th battle, West Virginia special deputy Bill Dempsey was wounded and tried to surrender byt Frank Phillips executed him. After the battle, the Hatfields who had been captured during the intervening weeks were put in jail and subsequently tried. The Battle of Grapevine Creek was the only military type skirmish of the feud and the final battle in the long conflict between the Hatfield and McCoy Families.
