Geocache Description:

This is the former site of Ellison Hatfield's home. Ellison was Devil Anse Hatfield's younger brother. In 1882, he was involved in a fight with three of Randolph McCoy's sons on election day near Preacher Anderson's Cabin on Blackberry Creek in Pike County, Kentucky.

During the fight, Ellison was stabbed 26 times and finally shot but did not immediately die from the wounds.

His attackers were taken to a one room school on Mate Creek. Ellison lingered a few days and then succumbed to his wounds. In retribution for his murder, the McCoys were taken back into Kentucky and executed at the site PawPaw Tree Massacre.

Ellison's death magnified the hostilities between the Hatfield and the McCoy families.

Ellison was also said to be the illegitimate father of Ellison "Cottontop" Mounts, who was hanged at the end of the feud for his role in the death of Alifair McCoy.
