Geocache Description:

This is one in a series of geocaches placed by Texas A&M Forest Service to showcase various aspects of the agency and properties it manages. This is located at the Lufkin Cudlipp Office.

In September 1916, the first TFS fire patrol units were inaugurated. One of the six patrolmen was headquartered in Lufkin. The patrolman was required to ride 15-25 miles each day while meeting people and talking to them about the importance of fire prevention. In June 1933, TFS established its Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) headquarters in Lufkin and had 12 camps with 2,950 enrollees. They were tasked with building fire towers, bridges, strung telephone lines, and were also engaged in forest fire suppression.

By 1936, a headquarters building was constructed for the agency with 14 rooms and two warehouses, and was established as the Division of Fire Protection. Today, this TFS facility houses agency departments including Wildfire Mitigation and Prevention, Water Quality, Forest Inventory Analysis, Wood Technology, Communications, Forest Health, Fire Administration, Capacity Building, and Law Enforcement.

The Lufkin Cudlipp Office is typically open during regular business of 8 am to 5 pm, Monday-Friday. For additional information, visit the office at 2127 S. First Street, Lufkin, TX 75901 or call (936) 639-8100.
