Geocache Description:

Casual Latvian countryside... what so special could be there? Well.. it's surprising how much amazing places are hidden from the routes of tourists and passed by without noticing the beauty of them. This is one of the places... beautiful church in middle of nowhere.

St. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church was started to build in 1934 and was finished only in 1961, since the building works were moving slowly, deans were changing and during the WW II construction works were fully stopped. In 1961 building work were finished, but soon the church was expropriated. In Soviet times there was a club, a library, and other institutions. The church was regained only in 1989. In 27 December 1989 it was consecrated by bishop V.Nukss.

When you do a turn from old Daugavpils -Kraslava road to the church, take a look to the first building on right. This is the old church, you still can see some crosses there. Before it became a church it actually have been a house of the parish. Nowadays it has been used as chapel.

It has been told that in the past it was not allowed to put up a big cross on church since it would disturb soviet military flights from Lociki airport nearby...

NB! Church is still working and people from closer villages are still coming here on Sundays. The church service starts at 10am on Sundays and goes aprox. till 11am  or a bit longer. There is also some wedding ceremonies taking place there mostly in summer. Please be careful when people around!
