St Matthias Church is an Anglican church in Richmond, London. Built in the Victorian Gothic style in 1857, and described as "the grandest church in Richmond", it has been designated a Grade II listed building. The architect was George Gilbert Scott.
St Matthias, whose tall (195ft) spire is a familiar landmark for miles around is at the corner of Friars Stile Road and Kings Road as well as Church Road.
The St. Matthias Centre is a busy community hub and there is a Coffee Bar which is open every weekday morning during term time. Many diverse groups run from the premises. There are occasional trips up the tower, which, although quite a climb affords incredible views over London. If you go to the front of the church and look up you can see where a lot of restoration work has been done recently. If you look carefully either side of the rose window you can see two carved heads - and man on the left and woman on the right - the man is the architect responsible for the restoration and the lady is his wife.
If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first at churchmicro@gmail.com so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
