This site was selected for the Armidale Gaol in 1859 and building commenced in 1860. The gaol was in use from 1863-1920 and demolished in 1929. Blocks from the gaol can be seen at a monument east of the building. The present building for the Armidale Teachers College was completed in 1930. In 1988 it was amalgamated with the University of New England and the New England Conservatorium of Music was established in the building in 2004. This heritage building has views over the city and well kept gardens. The front steps are a popular photographic spot.

But not just a beautiful building, the Old Teachers College has a secret. The intrigue of what was hidden in the storerooms underneath the building during World War II began when a van Gogh tag was found under the stairs. Collections from the State Library of NSW were transferred to the College for safe keeping, one of only two locations - the other being the Bank of NSW in Barmedman. In December 1941 255 cases of manuscripts, including the first folio of Shakespeare, were sent to either safe house.

The cache is a micro, please bring your own pen.
