St Andrew’s in Norton is a lovely Suffolk church.
Do find the time to go inside, as it has some surprises.
For starters, St Andrew’s is renowned for its 14th century misericords, considered some of the finest in an East Anglian village church. How many different images can you spot? The themes vary and include a woman carding wool, the martyrdom of St Edmund, a lion devouring a wodewose and a cleric studying. But, quite incredulously, there’s a 14th century representation of a youth being reprimanded!
The remains of medieval glass include images of St Christopher carrying the Christ child over the water, St Etheldreda with her crozier, St Andrew with his cross saltire and St Apollonia with a rather oversized tooth in her pincers.
On the exterior of the church are some gargoyles to admire before exploring the churchyard, from which one can see the former Rectory now a splendid private home.
“If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first at churchmicro@gmail.com so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the Bookmark list.”
