Le samedi 5 septembre 1914, à partir de 15h00, la Brigade Marocaine du général Ditte, faisant partie de la 6ème armée de Michel Joseph Maunoury, doit attaquer les flancs de la colline du bois du télégraphe. Une fois encore, les hommes s’élancent sans soutien d’artillerie, ni de mitrailleuse.
En gravissant les pentes de l’objectif afin d’enlever les positions allemandes, les 2 régiments de tirailleurs marocains sont pris par le feu intense de l’ennemi. En tentant de contourner le bois du Télégraphe en direction de Penchard de nombreux officiers, sous-officiers et soldats sont tués.
Le bois du Télégraphe et la butte de Penchard furent néanmoins presque enlevés par le courage des troupes et des officiers de la brigade marocaine, mais des renforts allemands fraichement envoyés pour soutenir la position forcent les troupes coloniales à la retraite.
A 16 heures, le 5 septembre 1914, la brigade marocaine a perdu une grande partie de ses cadres français sans aucun résultat apparent. Les rescapés de la brigade marocaine se replient sur Villeroy sous les tirs particulièrement intenses des troupes allemandes.
En l’espace d’une seule heure, cette attaque aura coûté la vie à près de 1150 hommes et 19 officiers

The 5th of september 1914, from 3PM, the Moroccan Brigade of General Ditte launched an attack on the Telegraph wood that stretch on the Penchard hill.
Once again, the French army rushed forward without any support of artillery, and no more machine gun.
The two regiment of the Moroccan Brigade climbed the hill to take the German positions, yet, they were immediately targeted by German artillery and machine gun.
A lot of officers and non commissioned officers were killed, trying to skirt the wood in the direction of Penchard.
Despite of the great losses, the Telegraph wood was nearly taken by the French army, thanks to the bravery of the Moroccan soldiers. Yet they had to retreat in front of well rested German reinforcement.
At 4PM, the Moroccan Brigade had lost the majority of its French officers without any result. Therefore, the French troops must retreat under a violent cannonade. During this bloody hour, 1150 men and 19 officers were killed in action.
