The Story of Stone Head
and then some.
You don’t have to have a stone
head to live in Stone Head, but it helps. In fact little is left of this
community but the stone head for which it was named. The roadside bust was
carved in 1851 by Henry Cross as part of his obligation to the local government.
At the time, able-bodied men were required to put in several days labor on
public works projects around Brown County in addition to paying taxes. Cross
proposed to work off his 6 days a year obligation by carving three Busts to
place on roadside markers along New Bellsville Pike, and since one was going to
be of the venerable George Summa, the road’s supervisor, officials agreed.
Two of the busts on the old road
are long gone, and only one remains, the Stone Head of Stone Head. Today it is
painted white with black features, the stern face of a humorless mime. It has
seen happier times, and so has the town of Stone Head.

Diver: Some time in the1980’s the Stone Head was stolen and was missing for
several years. The head was eventually found when a tip that it was being used
as a Hat Rack located just inside the door of the headnapper. I
was told this by my brother and sister-in-law who lived in Brown County at the
time. From my observations there is only one house left in Stone Head. I
remember as a kid there use to be several houses and a small general store
located there. The small section of road that is in front of the stone head use
to be Hwy.135 until the improvements were made to the intersection. (A convenient
parking place)
