OK, you first find maniacs. The gauntlet is thrown. This cache will take a bit of effort.
I picked a spot on the topo map of Gatineau Park that intrigued me, and was safely away from any paths that I know, and made my way there. The cache was going to contain a special gimmick, but I was having a scatterbrained day, and after 1.5 hours backtracking on a trail searching for my dropped GPS (found it, obviously) and a mountain bike crash, having found a decent cache site still more or less alive and undamaged, I found I'd forgotten the special gimmick at home. So alas, the cache only contains
- Magnifying glass
- Door peephole gadget
- Calculator
- Electronic golf scorekeeper
- Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 tape
- Over 60 Minutes with David Wilcox tape
- Staple remover
- Nortel "Earth squeeze ball"
- Magic triangle puzzle
- Strut the Rooster teenie beanie baby
- 1976 Olympics bronze ashtray
- Neon bulb electric circuit tester
Plus logbook, pen and pencils of course. Observe the usual drill, i.e. no food items.
The cache container is a 1 gallon screw top container with a 10cm opening. It is standing upright among the roots of a dead tree trunk about 5-6m high and 40cm thick. There is excellent sky view here and the GPS indicated 5m estimated position error. Please stand the cache container upright again; it is most waterproof that way (the lid doesn't seal perfectly; why oh why is it *so* hard to find cache containers that can withstand our weather?).
I found a spot with a pretty good view now that there are no leaves. In the summer only glimpses of the view will be visible. If you liked "Meech Lake Pressure Cooker" you'll probably like this spot.
After visiting, please mail me (don't post) how you got there (there are at least two equally promising approaches, both with quite a bit of bushwhacking) and give the coordinates of where you left a trail! With my luck there's probably a well known (to all but me) undocumented trail running 50m from the cache! Perhaps an approach involving a portable water craft might be the most efficient.
