Geocache Description:

This virtual cache is located in the historic Magnolia Cemetery.

The cemetery gates are open from 8 am to 5 pm.

On February 17, 1864, the H.L. Hunley was the first submarine to sink an enemy ship. Approximately 4 miles off of the coast of Sullivans Island, SC, the Hunley sunk the Warship U.S.S. Housatonic. As planned, the Hunley was to return; however, the submarine with a crew of eight was never seen again. Fast forward 131 years to May 4, 1995 when best-selling author Clive Cussler discovered the Hunley. The remains of the crew was recovered and interred in April 2004 after a funeral that attracted thousands. It was considered the last Confederate funeral. As to the submarine, it is being meticulously studied by a world-class group of researchers at a site in North Charleston. It is now on display for all to marvel. The cause of the sinking remains a mystery.
To properly log this cache, find H.L. Hunley's grave marker. A name with a first initial only for the first name is inscribed on the base of his marker and in the rear of it (I assume this was the name of the engraver). Email me this name and you will have yourself an easy find. *OPTIONAL* If you have the capability, post photos of your visit (without showing the required answer). By all means, SHOW RESPECT and REVERENCE during your visit. If you enjoy old cemeteries, you will love Magnolia Cemetery. Thank you and enjoy.
