About the Church

Built between 1440 and 1445 the Church, like most Cornish churches of the fifteenth century, consisted of a nave, chancel, two aisles and a north and south chapel. For nearly 400 years the building remained structurally unaltered until 1839 when it was restored by Sir Gilbert Scott. In 1849 new church gates were added and in 1897 the church was again restored by Edmund Sedding at a cost of £400 when the galleries, old pews and wall plaster were removed.

The parish is named after Saint Blaise. St Blaise was a well-educated Physician who became Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia. He was persecuted by Agricola, The famous Roman general, who ordered Blaise to renounce his faith. When Blaise refused he was thrown into prison where he helped sick prisoners and famously saved a child who was choking on a fish bone. Blaise refused to renounce his faith and was tortured by having his flesh torn with wool combs. He was finally beheaded on the orders of Agricola.
