Doc's Adventures #2 takes us to an island in the Great Miami River, just upstream from the Wayne Madison Rd Bridge. Unlike DA1, there's no land access to this cache, by trespass or otherwise. While it may be tempting to look at the closest land access and consider swimming, DON"T. The currents passing the island are swift on both sides and would be dangerous to a swimmer!
To access this cache, we suggest one of a couple possible adventures (in no particular order):
1 - Put in to the GMR where SR 73 crosses, east of Trenton. Enjoy the run down the river, stop for the cache, and then take out either at the old Wayne Madison Bridge, Rentschler Forest, or perhaps even run all the way down to Comb's Park. If you go that far, you can pick up Doc's Adventures #1 on your way by! Beware the damn near Rentscler though!
2 - Put in at the old Wayne Madison Bridge, paddle up river to the island and make landing, and then float back down with the current. This is the approach used to place the cache. At the time of placement, GMR was running at about 3000 CFS on the Middletown Gauge, which is a bit higher than normal, but if you're careful about where you are in the stream, you can make the island without a lot of effort.
A couple warnings:
- Again, Do not try to swim to this! The currents are interesting for paddle craft. They are down right dangerous for a swimmer.
- If you come down from up river DO NOT take the smaller southerly channel around the island! there is a DANGEROUS strainer just below the upriver split.
- Also beware the current along the north bank and the man-made erosion control. As it passes the rocks, it creates an intense and unstable eddy which will have your boat doing unusual things if you aren't paying attention!
Thanks for visiting our cache! Please be aware, this area does flood. The container is sturdy and cabled to it's hiding spot. If you visit after flooding though, the cache may be out in the open, so please re-hide it and cover it with debris.
Because of the possibility that the container may be in flood waters at some point, please use extra care to keep the log dry and sealed in it's bag and the container lid tightly closed!
Lastly, based on trash and footprints, there is at least a little muggle activity on the island, probably for fishing, so please use stealth as appropriate. A little CITO wouldn't be a bad thing either. Based on other footprints, wildlife also visits, so be sure to take along your camera! We spotted a massive blue heron while we were placing the cache.
