I've worked in downtown Pittsburgh since 1985 -- first right across the street from this park, and now just a block away. Mellon Square has always been one of my favorite places to visit. When it's busy here at lunchtime, the people-watching can't be beat, but the geocaching will be a challenge. At off hours, this is a peaceful, quiet oasis (but beware of your surroundings, as in any urban enivornment). NOTE: The park closes at 11:00 pm, says a sign at each entrance.
I hope this cache is a worthy successor to the Penny's Pack cache, "The First Green Roof," which was lost to the renovations and improvements made here in recent years. Ultimate Trivia: The first cache hidden in Mellon Square was "The Corner Seat" back in 2002. I was the only finder before the cache went missing.
The renovations made here breathed new life into an aging relic from Pittsburgh's first renaissance in the 1950's. Check out this "before" picture and look for differences during your visit! The new "terrace" overlooking Smithfield Street is my favorite change. So, that's where I hid the cache. Its difficulty rating is due largely to the muggle factor. If there are people at that end of the terrace, finding the cache discreetly will be virtually impossible.
