Geocache Description:

This cache is on top of one of the hills that used to guard the ancient salt road going North right through what is today the county of Nógrád in present day Hungary. The road carrying the salt trade came up from the present day town of Hatvan and in the vicinity of Rimóc there were two forts guarding it.

Over a 1000 years ago the Northern part of Hungary had already developed commerce on top of animal husbandry and agriculture. The ancient inhabitants of the area which contains the present county of Nógrád traded in salt and to guard the salt routes many forts and castles were built. On the ridge South of the village of Rimóc there are three hills.  The Southernmost of these carries the name "Castle top", which is strange as there is no sign of anything resembling either a fort or a castle. It is possible that over the centuries and due to reforestation the signs of an earth fort did not survive, but the name preserved reference to its old function.

Before visiting the top of the hill for the cache I suggest you visit the nearby village of Rimóc where you can see several interesting exhibitions and museums, a lovely church and two pretty chapels at either end of the village. Rimóc also has over 60 old venacular houses which are still inhabited and well maintained.  It is by one of the little chapels that you can park your car and walk 2 miles (3.2km) to find the cache on top of a lovely, forested hill, on a tree at a height of 1,5 m near the highest point marked with a metal pole. The box measures 14cm x 8cm x 7cm.

En route to the cache you can see the castle of Hollókő at the distance and the pretty hills of the area mixed with fields and streams. It is delightful hiking country which seems as if time forgot.
