Another history cache, this time in Columbia SC.
Historical Information:
Charleston was the states original capital. 1790 was the first year the state legislature met in Columbia, that statehouse was located on the west side of these grounds. In December, 1851 construction began on the current statehouse. The exterior walls were complete by 1865. Then when General Sherman came through Columbia he shelled the State House with cannons, thankfully the cannon balls were light and only minorly. Sherman shot 10 times, 6 bronze stars on the west and south-west side mark the spots where cannon fire damaged the building. The building was also set on fire, but this only damaged the inside. It took nearly 40 more years to complete after the war. In 1903 the Statehouse was finally finished. The State House offers free tours every Saturday of the month every hour on the half-hour from 9:30 to 3:30
