First Castel liberated
Le château de Bellenau date de 1426 et est niché dans le Marais du Cotentin.
Entre 1717 et 1903, il appartient à la famille Lafosse. Joseph Lafosse investi toutes ses économies dans un projet de collecte de spécimens botaniques rares. Il ya encore de nombreux vestiges de la collection dans les jardins qui ont été restaurés avec soin au cours des dernières années.
Au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Bellenau est occupé par les Allemands.
Le 6 Juin 1944, une des missions de la 101e division aéroportée, sous le commandement du colonel Howard Johnson, est de prendre l’écluse de la Barquette. Le château se situe entre la zone de saut D et l’objectif.
Tôt dans la matinée du 6 Juin, Bellenau est devenu le premier château à être libéré par les alliés.
The castel of Bellenau dates from 1426 and nestles in the Marais du Cotentin.
Between 1717 and 1903 it came into the ownership of the Lafosse family. Joseph Lafosse invested his life savings into a project of collecting rare botanical specimens. There are still many relics of the collection in the gardens that have been lovingly restored over the past years.
During the Second World War, Bellenau was occupied by the Germans.
On June 6th, 1944, one of the missions of the 101th airborne division, under the command of colonel Howard Johnson, is to take the sluice of the Barquette. The castle is situated between the zone of jump D and the objective.
Early in the morning of June 6th, Bellenau became the first castle to be liberated by the allies.
