Un salón con vistas

En varias ciudades españolas, como Granada, Palencia y Segovia, existe un paseo ajardinado que suele mirar a un río cercano y que los locales llaman “salón”, tal vez por analogía con la habitación principal de la casa, dada su situación céntrica, su amplitud y su cuidada decoración.

El de Segovia se denomina oficialmente “Paseo del Salón de Isabel II”, aunque los segovianos se refieren a él generalmente como “El Salón” a secas, y quizás con razón, ya que tal reina no tuvo nada que ver con su proyecto, que es varias décadas anterior a su nacimiento, ni con sus reformas ulteriores.
Sin embargo las vistas interesantes del salón segoviano no son hacia el Clamores, arroyo próximo de limitado interés, sino hacia los picos de la Sierra de Guadarrama, que se pueden contemplar con gran nitidez en un día claro, ya que además el aire de aquí suele estar limpio de contaminación. Los amantes de la montaña no podemos pasar por la zona sin echar una mirada, aunque sea rápida, al perfil de La Mujer Muerta, que es objeto de varias interesantes leyendas,

a la cima de La Bola del Mundo, cuyo original nombre proviene de la prehistoria de la televisión en España,

o a Los Siete Picos (de los que se ven sólo seis desde ese punto);

sin embargo Peñalara, el pico más alto de la sierra, aunque se puede observar desde El Salón, no se ve muy bien desde el mirador cercano al cache.

Los geocachers pensamos al verlos en algunos tesoros que nos esperan por allí, muchos de ellos con un ritmo de visitas de unas cinco al año y aún menos, y que “tenemos pendientes” desde hace tiempo. En mi caso son los dos de La Mujer Muerta los que me dan casi complejo de culpabilidad por no haberlos encontrado aún.

Además de las vistas a la sierra, el Salón ofrece varios puntos de interés, como el fragmento de la muralla que se conserva en excelente estado, aunque muy restaurado, y las dos puertas, del Sol y de la Luna, que hay en los extremos del parque y que han sido recientemente reconstruidas.

El cache es un micro en el que no hay sitio para instrumentos de escritura, pero sí puede admitir objetos muy pequeños. Está cerca de una fuente donde en un día de verano os podéis refrescar tras la captura del cache.

A “Room” with a view

In several Spanish towns, like Granada, Palencia or Segovia, there exists a park, or promenade, usually looking to a nearby river, which locals call “salón” (hall), perhaps because of its central location, wide spaces and neat ornamentation.

The one in Segovia is officially named “Paseo del Salón de Isabel II”, but segovianos refer to it usually as simply “El Salón”, maybe because the queen Isabel II had no relation with this park: its design took place many years before her reign and she probably never set foot on it.

The interesting views from El Salón are not, however, to the nearby Clamores, a small and uninteresting brook, but to the peaks of the Sierra de Guadarrama, the mountain range which lies between Madrid and Segovia provinces. Thanks to the usually very clean air and its close range, in a clear day in the morning you can see with razor-shap clarity the outline of the Mujer Muerta (Dead Woman), about which there are several romantic legends, the Bola del Mundo and the Siete Picos (Seven Peaks, though from here you will see only six).

Peñalara, the highest summit of the sierra, (2428m) is also visible, but you will have better views of it from other points in Segovia. If you are a mountain-lover geocacher, you will probably think also about all the nice caches that may be waiting for you, lonely and a bit bored for lack of visits, on the summits of these mountains; some of them have as few as 2 or 3 visits per year. In my case there are a couple of them on the Mujer Muerta about which I feel a bit guilty not to have visited them yet.

Besides the sierra views, the Salón has a number of interesting items, such as a large fragment of the town walls, in very good condition, and the two old gateways to the town (Sungate and Moongate), recently restored. The cache is a micro. There is no room for a writing pen, though you can trade very small objects. It is near a fountain where you can refresh yourself in a hot day after finding the cache.
