A CAMINHO DOS BALCÕES
O trilho até os Balcões inicia-se a partir da estrada regional E.R. 103 no Ribeiro Frio, fazendo-se acompanhar pela Levada da Serra do Faial. O miradouro dos Balcões oferece-nos um esplendido cenário, totalmente coberto pelos vales verdejantes característicos da Floresta Laurissilva, área integrante da Rede Natura 2000. Em dias de boa visibilidade, poderá avistar-se a cordilheira central da ilha, destacando-se os picos mais altos, o Pico do Areeiro e o Pico Ruivo, bem como o grandioso panorama geológico que é a massa rochosa da Penha d’Águia. Com alguma sorte é possível que aviste o Bisbis, o pássaro mais pequeno da floresta madeirense, e ainda o Tentilhão, o Melro-preto, a Manta e o raríssimo Pombo Trocaz.
A caminho dos Balcões predominam as mais variadas espécies endémicas como Loureiros, Vinháticos, a Uveira da Serra e as Orquídeas da Serra. Também é possível encontrar árvores exóticas de folha caduca como os Carvalhos e Plátanos, os quais se distribuem regularmente na margem do caminho.
A nossa cache encontra-se por baixo de uma pequena ponte existente no trilho, onde passa um pequeno curso de água. Para a cache encontrar deverá sair do trilho e descer até perto da água. Tenha em atenção o piso, pois poderá ser um pouco escorregadio devido às folhas caídas e à humidade existente.
The trail to the Balcões starts from the regional road E.R. 103 at Ribeiro Frio, taking with the Levada da Serra do Faial. The viewpoint Balcões offer us a splendid scene completely covered by verdant valleys that characterise of Laurissilva forest, wish is integrated in the Natura 2000 Network. On a clear day, you can catch sight of the central mountain chain of the island, highlighting more peaks high, Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, and the majestic geological display of the Penha d’Águia rock formation. With any luck, you may see a Firecrest, the smallest bird of the Madeira forest, and even the Chaffinches, the Blackbird, the Buzzards and the very rare Madeira Long-Foed Pigeon.
The path to the Balcões predominated the most varied endemic species abound, such as laurel trees, Madeira mahogany, Madeira blueberry and Madeira orchids. You can also find exotic deciduous trees like English oaks and London plane trees, which are found at regular intervals at the edge of the path.
Our cache is under a small bridge on the existing path, which passes a small watercourse. To find the cache you should leave the trail and go down near the water. Note the floor, it may be a bit slippery due to fallen leaves and the humidity.
