GeoTour Stop #19: The Eisenbahn Trail

The Eisenbahn, a German word for railroad or "iron road", is a 25-mile trail that extends from the historic city of West Bend into the scenic countryside of eastern Wisconsin past the glacial landscape of the Kettle Moraine State Forest.

The trail was once railroad tracks constructed for the Chicago and North Western Co in 1871. In 1988, it was purchased by Fox Valley & Western Ltd who filed for abandonment ten years later. In 2006, the 12.4-mile Washington County segment of the trail opened. The trail passes through farmland, industrial and residential areas, and near scenic waterways affording a variety of experiences. Bicycling, hiking, dog walking on a leash and other non-motorized uses are allowed in summer, and winter is open for cross country skiing, hiking and snow shoeing as long as conditions permit.

The Geocache Notification Form has been submitted to the Southeast Regional Headquarters of the Wisconsin DNR. Geocaches placed on Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource managed lands require permission by means of a notification form. . The DNR land manager information can be obtained here.
