GeoTour Stop #1: Historic Frisby House (& GeoTour HQ)
The life of Leander F. Frisby is a true American story of a self-made man. He was born in 1825 to a family of farmers in Ohio. He left home at age 17 and moved to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, to work and continue his education. With only 50 cents in his pocket, he set out on foot to Beaver Dam to accept a teaching position. After accepting several other teaching positions around the state while continuing his own law education, Mr. Frisby was admitted to the bar in 1850, moved to West Bend, and began practice on the Supreme Court.
Leander Frisby was elected the first District Attorney of the newly formed Washington County and became Superintendent of West Bend Schools. In 1856, he was appointed County Judge and was elected to the Wisconsin Legislature in 1860. Many other accomplishments followed as he remained a prominent figure in West Bend.
Leander married Frances Booker in 1854 and built the Frisby house in 1865. The house is an example of Italianate styling and still has its original woodwork. A unique feature of the house includes a cupola which offers an expansive view of West Bend. The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
The Frisby house is now home to the West Bend Chamber of Commerce. This is a great first stop on your tour. Go inside for more information about the Frisby House. Perhaps you can further inquire about Mr. Frisby's life and what he may have viewed from the cupola in the 19th century or the alleged paranormal activities that some claim exist today. You can also get information on other historic homes and places to see around West Bend. Hours of operation are Mon-Fri 9:00am-4:30pm. Open all four seasons!
