A fundação da pequena igreja dedicada a Nossa Senhora da Franqueira é por tradição atribuída a Egas Moniz, embora os elementos arquitectónicos mais antigos da actual estrutura do templo remontem ao século XV.
A planimetria do templo seria bastante transformada ao longo dos séculos XVII e XVIII, aumentando o volume do edifício e alterando significativamente a fachada.
A estrutura primitiva da ermida corresponde ao corpo rectangular da capela-mor, que conserva a cornija primitiva de gosto românico e a abóbada de nervuras gótica. No seu interior encontra-se um altar trazido de Ceuta por D. Afonso, conde de Barcelos cerca de 1415. O espaço da nave foi construído posteriormente, talvez já no século XVII, uma vez que a porta da sacristia apresenta gravada a data 1691.
A fachada apresenta um modelo de linhas verticais, cujo programa decorativo faz a transição entre o estilo chão e o gosto barroco. O portal, de moldura rectangular simples, é ladeado por dois janelos e encimada por uma grande janela de sacada com guarda de ferro. O conjunto é rematado por frontão triangular com nicho que alberga a imagem da padroeira, e do lado direito foi edificada a torre, em 1753, por Pedro Gomes Simões.

The façade presents a model of vertical lines whose decorative program makes the transition between the ground Baroque style and taste . The portal , simple rectangular frame , is flanked by two janelos and surmounted by a large bay window with iron guard . The whole is surmounted by a triangular pediment with niche that houses the statue of the Virgin , and the right tower was built in 1753 by Pedro Simões Gomes .
