[FR] Le château de Castelnau-de-Lévis a été construit en 1235 par Sicard Alaman, puissant vassal du comte de Toulouse Raymond VII ; il représentait un bastion avancé des possessions toulousaines (nord de la rivière Tarn) face à la royauté (sud du Tarn). Construit sur un piton rocheux nommé « puy de Bonnafous », le château sera longtemps appelé Castelnau-de-Bonnafous, avant que la famille de Lévis n'en hérite et lui donne son nom. Un village a été construit au pied des murailles à la même époque.
De l'ancien château, il ne subsiste que quelques ruines dont une tour de guet dominant la vallée du Tarn et la ville d'Albi. Il doit son piteux état à son rôle de carrière au cours des xixe et xxe siècles.
Une restauration partielle depuis le début des années 1980 permet de situer les murs de l'enceinte haute. De l'enceinte basse, ne subsiste qu'une porte fortifiée. La tour, haute de 35 mètres, se compose d'une tour demi-circulaire à laquelle est adossée une tour carrée. Elle comporte trois étages voutés. Chacun d'eux montre des traces d'un plancher disparu qui doublait le nombre d'étages.
Depuis le village, de Castelnau-de-Lévis, suivre les indications vers le château puis se garer vous sur le parking. Un chemin permet ensuite de monter à pied sur l'esplanade.
L'accès à la tour est fermé aux visiteurs.

[EN] The castel of Castelnau-de-Lévis was built in 1235 by Sicard Alaman, powerful vassal of Raymond VII de Toulouse; it was a bastion of Toulouse possessions (north of the River Tarn) against the monarchy (southern Tarn). Built on a rock named « Puy de Bonnafous », the castle was named Castelnau-de-Bonnafous for a long time, before the family of Levis will inherit and gives it its current name. A village was built at the foot of the walls at the same time.
Of the old castle, it remains only few ruins including a watchtower overlooking the Tarn Valley and the town of Albi. It owes its actual state as it was used as a stone quarry during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Partial restoration since the early 1980s allows to locate the walls of the high wall. Of the low enclosure remains only a fortified gate. The tower, 35 meters high, consists of a semicircular tower which is backed by a square tower. It has three floors vaulted. Each of them shows traces of a missing floor which doubled the number of stages.
From the village of Castelnau-de-Lévis, follow the signs to the castle and park in the car park area. A path is then used to walk up on the esplanade.
Access to the tower is closed to visitors.
