La grotte Ste-Anne est intimement liée à l’histoire monastique de St-Claude. Dès le 13e siècle elle est occupée successivement par plusieurs ermites dont le plus connu fut Jehan de Gand au milieu du 15e siècle. Plus tard une chapelle fut construite juste à côté et des pèlerinages y avaient lieu. On attribuait des vertus miraculeuses à la petite source qui sort de la grotte, son eau était sensée guérir les maladies des yeux.
Le dimanche 21 avril 1482, à l’occasion d’un pèlerinage à l’abbaye de St-Claude, cette modeste cavité eu l’honneur de recevoir la visite d’un roi de France : Louis XI.
Quelques légendes tenaces rodent encore autour de cette cavité : il y aurait un grand lac souterrain dans ses entrailles, elle était utilisée par les contrebandiers pour passer en Suisse… La réalité est beaucoup moins grandiose. Seul le porche en ogive offre une ambiance remarquable avec des effets de clair-obscur aux lumières changeantes. La suite de la grotte n’a pas beaucoup d’intérêt avec des conduits bas et très argileux.

This cave opens on the heights of Saint-Claude in the western slope of Mount Bayard. It climbs starting from the city by a series of paths and shaded trails. Gps a little disturbed by the cliffs but you can not miss the entrance! (follow the yellow signs. See also the map in the photo gallery)
Cave Ste-Anne is intimately linked to the monastic history of St. Claude. From the 13th century it was occupied successively by several hermits, the best known was Jehan de Gand in the mid 15th century. Later a chapel was built beside and pilgrimages were held there. Miraculous virtues were attributed to the little spring that comes out of the cave, the water was supposed to cure eye diseases.
On Sunday, April 21, 1482, during a pilgrimage to the abbey of St-Claude, this small cavity was honored to receive the visit of a king of France Louis XI.
Some stubborn legends still roam around this cavity : there would be a large underground lake in her womb, it was used by smugglers to enter Switzerland... The reality is much less grandiose. Only the arched porch offers a remarkable atmosphere with chiaroscuro effects of the changing light. Following the cave has not much interest with low and high clay pipes.
