Cette église, qui a donné son nom au quartier, est de fondation très ancienne et elle dépendait de l'abbaye de la Couture. La base de la tour, quelques fragments du mur de l'abside à l'est et de la nef, au sud-ouest, constitueraient les seuls vestiges de l'église du XIIè siècle (elle fut détruite par un incendie en 1367). Elle fut ensuite agrandie en 1473 par Charles d'Anjou, comte du Maine (extension du choeur et construction du transept). D'autres remaniements datent du XVIè siècle (nef et bas côté sud, élévation de la chapelle nord en 1523). Le bas-côté nord fut ajouté en 1626 et la chapelle de la Vierge (côté nord) en 1689.
Dans une niche sur l'angle du choeur, une Vierge à l'Enfant en terre cuite de la première moitié du XVIIè siècle est attribuée à l'atelier du sculpteur manceau Charles Hoyau, preuve du savoir-faire des potiers de la ville. L'église fut ensuite considérablement remaniée au XIXè siècle et dotée d'un clocher en 1900.
