Jusqu'en 1859, la Butte-aux-Cailles et ses moulins dépendait du petit Gentilly. On appelait ce hameau "Glacière" car la Bièvre y alimentait des bassins qui gelaient l'hiver. On y récoltait alors la glace qui était stockée dans des puits recouverts de terre et utilisés durant toute l'année par les crémiers et glaciers de la capitale.
Cette butte est un petit monticule de 63m de haut. A l'origine de son nom, non pas le volatile, mais Pierre Caille qui y avait acheté un lopin de terre et fondé une famille en 1543.
Depuis la butte, le regard portait loin sur la vallée de la Bièvre sur le coteau de laquelle on extrayait de la pierre et de l'argile dont on faisait les tuiles et les briques.
Le jardin, très pentu, et l'escalier qui le traverse sont bâtis sur une ancienne carrière d'argile. L'exploitation de cette roche tendre et malléable se faisait à ciel ouvert, par banquettes qui étaient découpées en gros pavées à l'aide de truelles appelées incisoire et hoyau.
Le petit square Brassaï s'est donc installé en 1977 sur les pentes de ce terrain, il possède en particulier un magnifique figuier qui produit des fruits et embaume le jardin à la fin de l'été. Il rend hommage au photographe et écrivain Gyula Halász (Brassaï), ami de Prévert et Picasso, surnommé "l’œil de Paris".

[En] Until 1859 the Butte-aux-Cailles and its mills depended on "petit Gentilly", wasn't inside Paris. They called this village "Glacière (cooler)" because the Bièvre river fed basins that were freezing during winter. The ice was harvested and stored in pits covered with earth and used throughout the year by the dairymen and ice-sellers of the capital.
This "butte" is a small hill of 63m high. The origin of its name, not the bird name "Caille means Quails) but Pierre Caille who had bought a piece of land there and started a family in 1543.
From the mound, you could look far down the valley of the Bièvre on the hillside where stone and clay was mined to make tiles and bricks.
The garden, very steep, and the staircase that runs through are built on a former clay pit. Exploitation of this soft and malleable rock was done in the open, in benchs that were cut into large paved, using trowels called "incisoire" and "hoyau" (plowshares).
The small Brassaï garden was therefore installed in 1977 on these slopes. It owns particularly a beautiful fig tree that produces fruits and perfumes the garden in late summer. He paid tribute to photographer and writer Gyula Halász (Brassaï), a friend of Prévert and Picasso, nicknamed "the eye of Paris".
Move closer to the games dedicated to children according to their age to start your search. When it freezes you will be quiet, but when the weather is nice, beware the place is very busy. Be discreet.
