Geocache Description:

A traditional cache placed on a public footpath close to the village church.  Continuing the Church Micro series.

St Michael & All Angels, Hose

There is evidence of habitation in this area as far back as 1500 BC with a group of Bronze Age burial mounds being evident to the South of the village.

There is also a prehistoric trackway to the north-east of the current village.

There is evidence of Saxon pottery and the village appears 'established' by the 10th - 11th centuries, with a Saxon "manor house" at one end and a church at the other.

The manor house came into the hands of the Charnels, but was destroyed as a result of an inheritance dispute in 1377. The outline of the site can still be traced by the surrounding roads and paths, within which the foundations of one wall and wild damson bushes still remains.

THE CHURCH

The effect of the Black Death can be seen by looking at the list of vicars displayed in the church - three died in the 5 years between 1348 and 1352. St Michael & All Angels Church is a 13th Century building which was extensively repaired in the 18th and 19th Centuries.

The exterior is coursed ironstone rubble and coursed squared ironstone, with limestone dressings.

There are some old gravestones in the churchyard, the church is part of the Belvoir Angels group of churches, but I haven't seen a Belvoir Angel headstone here. If you do find one, (this is what they look like)

please mention it in your log.
