Syston Parish Church, lies beside the lovely hillside park of Syston Hall, the park being the scene of inter-collegiate motor cycle races prior to the Second World War.
The beautiful church of St Mary is a partly rebuilt Norman church, with later additions.
The Old Hall is the home of the Thorold family, the current baronet being in residence. Until fairly recent times the whole village was owned by the Thorold family but most of the houses are now privately owned and new homes in the village have done nothing to destroy the peace and tranquillity.
Syston is the 'Willingham' of Sir Walter Scott's novel The Heart of Midlothian.
SYSTON OLD HALL AND ST. MARYS CHURCH
The Church dates back to the 11th Century with later additions and rennovations. It comprises of local Ironstone and limestone rubble.
The interior of the church is worth visiting, with some poignant memorials to the Thorold family. Most of the interior and the Church windows remain from the 12th Century, there are also later (1902) stained glass windows dedicated to the Thorold family.
I remember there being a cache not very far from the church, and in the grounds here, this no longer appears on the geocaching map.
