Geocache Description:

Church Micro 5129 - St. Michael and All Angels, South Normanton

 photo cmsouthnormanton_zps44ab1c09.jpg

The church of St Michael and All Angels is an ancient stone building, dated 1137. The tower on the west side is crocketed and embattled, having four pinnacles.

Inside the church are numerous memorial plaques and commemorative stained glass windows. The south window at the east end is dedicated to Christ the light of the world and is a memorial to the fallen of the 1914-18 war. The Sanctuary is oak panelled, and the altar is also beautifully designed in carved oak. Also contained in the sanctuary are two carved chairs of different sizes, one a Bishops chair the other a childs size no doubt intended for small acolytes. On the south side of the altar are two credence tables, one displaying a rather lovely brass plate. Over the other is a small stained glass window. Between the two is a Piscina with Peters pence ledge still intact.

The tower was probably built in the 14th century. In the year 1813 four crocketed pinnacles were added. In the south face of the tower the present clock replaced a very ancient and valuable stone faced clock. Originally this was a highly decorated Church, thought to be a fine example of the decorated period in Derbyshire. During an extensive alteration almost all traces of the decoration have vanished.
