Church Micro 4937…Worplesdon - United Reformed Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

pairoboots: As per my previous logs this is no longer a church but I did obtain permission to leave it as a Church Micro even though it is now a Muslim Centre. So much work is being done on the building that I felt I needed to replace the picture. However they seem to be taking a long time to do the work and there is currently scaffolding around the front of the building. I have therefore reluctantly decided to archive it.

Geocache Description:

Another contribution to this series, started by sadexploration, is a simple offset cache at Worplesdon United Reformed Church.

Worplesdon United Reformed Church

Worplesdon United Reformed Church - Perry Hill Chapel

Under the auspices of the Surrey Mission Society, a place of worship for “Protestant Dissenters”, as non-conformists were once called, was built in the early 19th century at Perry Hill, Worplesdon. At first there was a succession of ministers and lay persons taking services here and in other villages around the district.  Then, in 1874, the Church at Worplesdon was received into the Guildford Group of Congregational Churches when the Surrey Mission Society was disbanded. It wasn’t long before the satellite churches became concerned at the way they were being managed from Guildford. Worplesdon decided to secede from the Group and carry on independently.

It was then necessary to find a new, independent, building. Mr Hope donated an iron buidling (called Hope Hall) and the Burch family donated a plot for it in the grounds of their home, Perry Hill House. The original Church remained unused for several years until the situation was resolved when the Church was restored and used instead of Hope Hall. In 1919 Hope Hall was moved to behind the Church to become the Church Hall, and was eventually replaced by a more permanent structure in 1994.

The coordinates take you to the Church entrance where you will see two “foundation stones” on the Church.
One has X words saying it was built in ABCD and the other Y words that it was restored in EFGH.
There is also a memorial stone on one of the gate posts - it has Z words and the year IJKL.
When counting words exclude single letters, initials, digits and numbers.

You will find the cache, a small click and lock box, containing only a log book - no pencil, about 170m away from the church at:

N 51 16.(C+K)GX   W 000 36.J(Z+Y-F)(H+D)

You do not have to cross the busy main road, but please take extra care, particulary if you are with children or dogs.

There are spaces for cars outside the Church or park in the layby at N 51 16.792 W 000 36.878

Congratulations to Tarra&Co for First To Find only 35 minutes after publication
